" IT NEVER LEAVES YOU "

I work in Department of Corrections, no I am more than a guard I am a correctional officer.

Behind all those walls and razorwire is a whole community. The best of the worst and the worst of the worst are housed there. Daily when I go through the entrance I have no gurantee that I am going to walk out on my own. I am always breaking up fights, confiscating homemade weapons, facing deadly diseases. I have seen many suicide attempts and assist in bringing them back to life. As a law enforcement official a days job is never the same and the stress at times seems so overwhelming. I applaud my fellow officers.

Our minds are never our own for we all learn to be more than cautious, even off duty, never trust and always be alert. It never leaves you. There are so many suicides when correctional officers retire for this is all they know. Counseling and alcoholism take many, sad statistics for men and women who put their lives on the line daily. Families fall apart for they think they know what the other is going thru but how do you explain emotions?

Thanks to all who serve.
